Balanced Assessment for the Mathematics Curriculum is an NSF funded project conducted by four university departments at Michigan State, Berkeley, Harvard and the Shell Centre. Tasks are at the heart of standards-based reform. A much broader range of tasks is needed for performance assessment - mainly rich, substantial tasks close to those which students need to be able to tackle, if they are to be effective in their everyday life and work.

These books are collections of tasks developed by the project together with marking schemes and commentaries.

There are two Balanced Assessment packages at each of the US grade levels 4, 8, 10 and 12. Each package offers 10 to 20 tasks ranging in length from 5 to 45 minutes; some packages also offer an extended project task.
